Divergence of clay soils is a physicochemical phenomenon in which the repulsive forces between particles, especially in the presence of exchangeable and dissolved sodium, overcome the forces of attraction and clay particles separate from each other and disperse in the liquid phase after contact with water. In contrast, convergence or flocculation leads to the formation of more stable arrangements and aggregation of particles and plays a fundamental role in maintaining soil structure, resistance to internal erosion, permeability and stability of soil structures. The aim of this paper is to provide a combined analysis of the effect of physicochemical and mineralogical properties of clays on the transition between these two states. The present review focuses on scientific literature published between 2023 and August 2026 and examines variables such as exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), cation exchange capacity (CEC), electrical conductivity (EC), pH, zeta potential, specific surface area, Atterberg limits, type and amount of clay, and nature of interlayer cations, along with the minerals montmorillonite, illite, kaolinite, and vermiculite. Emerging evidence suggests that no single indicator is able to fully predict divergence; however, high ESP and SAR, low ionic strength, and abundance of sodium smectite, especially montmorillonite, create a very high-risk combination. On the other hand, divalent cations such as Ca2+ and Mg2+ increase the convergence and stability of aggregates by compacting the diffuse double layer, reducing the absolute value of the zeta potential, and creating cation bridges. New data also show that pH, anion type, particle size, layer charge, and interlayer structure of clay can significantly modulate soil response. Accordingly, the paper proposes a multicriteria assessment framework in which pinhole, fine clay, dual hydrometer, and chemical measurements are combined with XRD, SEM, and, if possible, zeta potential. The main conclusion is that the divergence and convergence potential are the products of the simultaneous interaction of “mineral–surface–cation–pore solution–structure” and that engineering assessment should move from relying on fixed boundaries of a single variable to multiparameter and mechanism-oriented analysis.
