As one of the largest consumers of natural resources and producers of greenhouse gases, the construction industry stands at the forefront of global efforts to achieve sustainable development. This paper examines three emerging categories of construction materials with the potential to transform the industry: geo-sourced (earth-derived) materials, bio-based materials, and carbon-negative materials. Geo-sourced materials—such as adobe, cob, and stone—are produced with minimal processing and without the need for high temperatures, resulting in a very low carbon footprint. Bio-based materials are derived from renewable plant or animal sources and are capable of sequestering carbon within their structures. Innovative carbon-negative materials—utilizing technologies such as biochar, mineral carbonation, and biomimetic enzymes—absorb more carbon dioxide over their lifecycle than they emit. Through a systematic review of scientific literature from the past five years, this paper analyzes the theoretical foundations, practical applications, environmental benefits, and challenges associated with each of these three categories. Findings indicate that combining these materials—specifically pairing lightweight bio-based materials with high-thermal-mass geo-sourced materials—can simultaneously improve a building's thermal performance, acoustic properties, and indoor air quality. However, obstacles such as a lack of technical standards, market resistance, and supply chain constraints have slowed the pace of widespread adoption. The article concludes by offering policy recommendations and directions for future research.
